The Factual History of the Tree
THE FIRST TREE
The tree which had become so decrepit that it no longer had any branches
was felled in 1901 and removed to a Mr. Moseys garden at the lodge at
Lodge hill where it was erected on the lawn. The remains of the now
demolished lodge are located on the brow of the hill behind the quarry at
Kiveton park station. I made a detailed search of the area around the lodge
and located what was once a terraced garden. In the garden I found the
burned out remains of a large stump in a position that would probably have
been on a lawn. I assumed this to be the last remains of the tree.
THE SECOND TREE
Planted on the 3rd of October 1901 by the Duke of Leeds to celebrate the
new Century and to mark the birth of the Duke of Leeds son the Marquis
of Carmarthen. The tree was a sapling grown from an acorn that had fallen
from the Major Oak.
This tree was removed by the council when the road was widened in the
1970's.
THE THIRD TREE
The present tree was planted in 1974 by the Kiveton Park Folk Club and
was commemorated by G.F. Young the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire.
A plaque at the tree gives details.
